My Services

1

Initial Consultation

Let’s chat. During this complimentary 30-minute initial phone or Zoom conversation, we’ll get to know each other. We’ll discuss your concerns and needs and determine how I can assist you. Grab a cup of your favorite beverage, and let’s have a conversation about your end-of-life wishes. If we determine we’re a good fit, we can discuss moving forward at your pace.

2

Let's Plan Together

We’ll work together on your Advance Directive, choose your healthcare proxy, and discuss the various burial options and the details that will make your end-of-life as unique as you are. Often, giving these items thought alleviates our fear around death and helps us live a life of purpose. This is a beautifully empowering process.

Here to Assist

Decide how the last chapter of your life will read

Delia encourages families to treat dying as a natural process and is humbled to offer end-of-life counseling as a compassionate end-of-life doula.

Advanced Directive

This is a very important document as it gets us thinking about our end-of-life and encourages us to have conversations with loved ones. It’s a legal document that will express your wishes for end-of-life healthcare, should you not be able to make decisions for yourself. We’ll also choose a healthcare proxy, someone you trust to advocate on your behalf.

During this discussion, we take into consideration important things such as:

  • What quality-of-life looks like to you.
  • The life sustaining measures you desire and how you’d like to be cared for at end-of-life.
  • Even the small details that make a big difference. At end-of-life your personal space is a sacred space where family and friends will visit you, share memories and say their final goodbyes. So we’ll discuss what that looks like for you and include these items and more in your Advance Directive:
    • The type of music you enjoy
    • Do you want your pets with you for comfort?
    • Your favorite flowers
    • Who do you want / or not want present?

End-of-Life Planning

We will discuss options and your burial wishes. There are so many beautiful options for celebrating life. Exploring and planning these items is empowering and healing.

Examples include living funerals, home wakes/funerals, other rituals

  1. Traditional or green / natural burials, and cremation.
  2. Money does not need to be spent on expensive funeral arrangements or caskets in order to honor someone.
  3.

Estate Planning

Delia can provide the necessary guidance and help you choose an attorney that can properly handle these important legal matters.

Grief and Bereavement

Delia is a Certified Grief Coach. She is experienced with helping you navigate through the many stages of grief. Delia supports the patient and loved ones through the entire end-of-life journey and shares with the loved ones grieving skills to help honor the loss and celebrate the spirit of the deceased. If additional grief support is needed, she will make necessary recommendations.

PALLIATIVE CARE/HOSPICE COORDINATION

Delia has over 10 years experience working with hospice professionals to coordinate resources. (If a hospice company has not been chosen, she can assist with the decision making.) Coordination with hospice will ensure the patient’s needs are met, alleviating stress for the family.

Setting a sacred space

The space of the dying is sacred. Delia will work with the patient and family to ensure comfort and ease.  Consideration is given to small and meaningful items we discussed in the Advance Directive and make sure your wishes are followed.

Planning the Vigil

The vigil is a moment of calm and peace, usually the last 24 – 48 hours of a person’s life. Delia can help the patient and family plan how they would like to spend this time. We consider who the patient would like present and what they would like during this time: music, prayer, silence, memory sharing. This time can be a beautiful time of reflection and honor. A loving goodbye.

Companionship

Companion to the dying and the dying person’s loved ones – The main goal of the End-of-Life Doula is to be a companion to the dying and their loved ones. Delia is a supportive presence and is there to “hold the space” for the dying patient and their loved ones in order to decrease as much stress as possible at this time. This can happen either in person (if local to Dallas) or virtual.

Interventions for comfort

Delia is trained in all phases of end-of-life care. She knows what to look for as a patient’s condition changes and knows what interventions to suggest to the family to increase comfort.

Facilitate Unresolved Issues

Being a great listener and helping to facilitate any unresolved issues such as things that have been left unsaid is an important to Delia. She encourages her patients and family to have meaningful conversations.

Writing the Obituary

Delia can assist the patient and/or family to write an obituary.

Writing the Eulogy

Often it’s difficult to put thoughts and emotions into words. Delia can help the patient/family to write a eulogy.

Legacy Projects

Delia assists her patients to document their meaningful life stories to leave behind for their loved ones. This can be done with writing, recording, videotape, songs – we can be creative and make it personal and beautiful.
